OATS

Being in the heart of Amish country where a lot of oats are grown for horse feed every year, we know a thing or two about oat seed. Green Prairie offers multiple oat varieties including both spring-planted and fall-planted winter-hardy oats. We were awarded the foundation oat contracts from the oat breeders at the University of Illinois in the spring of 2025. This is testament to our ability to grow a quality product and maintain purity. We ship Foundation oats accross the Midwest to growers that are wanting to raise certified seed to sell to their customers. Working closely with the breeding program at the University of Illinois and their cereal grain research allows us to bring quality to our customers and stay on the cutting edge of new oat varieties.

KSC WINTER WHEAT

The wheat varieties selected by KSC/Green Prairie Seed will be high yielding and will exceed the specifications of wheat millers. Our winter wheat varieties have excellent disease resistance, high yields with above-average test weight, and frequently provide a premium for the seller. Each year we have growers raving about their wheat crop as they see the yields produced in their fields. If you grow winter wheat as part of your operation, you owe it to yourself to give our wheat a try. Like many other growers have done in the past, we suspect you will be back the following year to plant even more acres using our wheat seed.

TRITICALE

Triticale is a cross between wheat and rye, making it one of those crops that will survive the winter. This cross gives it excellent feed value in the spring, and allows a summer crop to follow. Triticale is a species that can reduce soil erosion and capture excess nitrogen, making it an excellent choice for a cover crop in a mixture or pure stand. Rapid early growth after planting and deep-set roots with good root mass improve soil structure. It has the potential to produce tonnage that will be a good weed competitor as well as offering the opportunity to graze in the fall and winter months making it a dual-purpose species.

CEREAL RYE

Cereal Rye is typically used as a cover crop or as part of a cover-crop mix in the Midwest. It has an excellent fibrous root system that alleviates surface compaction. Rye can be successful planted later than almost any other cover crop due to its low germination and growth temperature requirements. Cereal Rye is known for being the best cereal grain for retaining nitrogen. It’s common for a fall planted cereal rye crop to scavenge 25# to 50# of nitrogen per acre, with some situations being in excess of 100#. The vigorous spring growth suppresses weeds through both competition and allopathic chemicals.

BARLEY

Barley has low water requirements compared to other cover crop species. Under poor fertility conditions, barley is a good choice and can help render P & K available for your next crop. Barley provides a good feed-quality grain that can be harvested 2-3 weeks earlier than wheat, which then allows your double crop to be planted sooner. Barley excretes carbohydrates known as monosaccharides through the roots to feed soil biology and has been shown to release more monosaccharides than even alfalfa. When used as a green-chop feed product, it far exceeds rye in feed value but will come in a little short on tonnage.

Other Grains

GRAIN SORGHUM

Green Prairie has several varieties of grain sorghum available for both grain production and wildlife plots. Contact us to help select the variety that best suits your needs.

SUNFLOWERS

Green Prairie Seed Co offers a couple of different options for those looking to grow sunflowers. Peredovik sunflowers are a basic sunflower with limited herbicide options. We also sell herbicide tolerant sunflowers such as Clearfield and Express Sunflowers that allow specific herbicides to be applied over the top with no damage. Because of limited supply, herbicide tolerant sunflower need to be ordered in late winter.

MILLET

Pearl Millet is a summer annual that provides a forage or hay source for the summer and early fall seasons. It offers a high-quality food source.

Japanese Millet is a favorite for those seeking a small seed source for upland game and water fowl plots. It is often planted in mid to late summer to provide a food source for winter.
